Career Development Guidelines

ND, DSOM and MSOM Students

First Year

  • Create LinkedIn profile
  • Complete three informational interviews (add these people to your LinkedIn)
  • Identify three career options of interest to you
  • Write a bio based on one of your career goals
  • Update your CV or resume (whichever you already have)
  • Consider part-time related work (up to 15 hours)

Second Year

  • Review and update career options
  • Complete three informational interviews that relate to your career options (add these people to your LinkedIn)
  • Update your bio
  • Join professional associations for your area of study (both in Oregon and in any state you plan to practice in after graduation). Attend at least one meeting a quarter or engage remotely
  • Update your resume, create a CV if you don’t have one already
  • Consider part time, related work (up to 15 hours)

Third Year

  • Review and update career options (check in with associations or any state you may live in to see if your career goals align with state laws and practice.)
  • Complete three informational interviews that relate to your career options (add these people to your LinkedIn)
  • ND program develop business plan (in business class.)
  • Update bio to fit your business plan/model and craft a personal business statement
  • Use bio to consider your “brand.” Start thinking about the experience you want potential clients to have when they look your web page, when they talk to you, enter your clinic, enter your exam/treatment rooms, leave with a treatment plan. What colors, words, images, interactions will create that experience?
  • Start considering actual location and name (if you are going to be independent) of your practice
  • Update your CV and resume
  • Attend a professional event quarterly
  • Consider part time, related work (up to 15 hours)

Fourth Year

  • Review and update career options
  • Update your CV and resume
  • Complete three informational interviews that very closely relate to your career options have them review your resume or CV and provide feedback
  • Refine and practice your personal business statement to align with your career goals and start using it when networking.
  • If you are planning to go into private practice have your business plan reviewed (through career services). Create timeline to track opening of your business to NPLEX or NCCAOM results.
  • Work on location and branding
  • Attend professional events as often as you can
  • Consider part time, related work (up to 15 hours)

NUNM Masters Students

Each quarter consider the items below and complete as many as possible building on the work you completed for career development the prior quarter.

  • Create LinkedIn profile
  • Complete one to three informational interviews (add these people to your LinkedIn)
  • Identify three career options of interest to you
  • Update your resume
  • Consider part-time related work or volunteer opportunities (up to 15 hours)
  • Join professional associations if there are any for industries you want to work in. Attend at least one meeting a quarter or engage remotely
  • Attend a professional event quarterly
  • Refine and practice your elevator pitch to align with your career goals and start using it when networking.
